The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation is dedicated to fundraising in partnership with our community to meet the medical equipment and facility needs of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation was established in 1992 and governed by an eleven member Board. Since its inception, the Foundation has raised over $12 million in support of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
The Kenora General Hospital, previously known as the Rat Portage Royal Jubilee Hospital, was opened in 1897 and built with donated labour and $1000 in donations. In 1968, the Lake of the Woods District Hospital was formed after merging with the St. Joseph’s Hospital that was established in 1903 by Bishop Laugevin and the three Sisters of Charity of Providence.
The present facility with 480 staff including 32 doctors and 18 specialists (Internal Medicine, Oncology, Rheumatology, Orthopedics, Dermatology and Ophthmaology) was constructed in 1973. It serves a population of 25,000 for primary care and 90,000 for secondary specialist care. During the summer months, these numbers increase to 70,000 for primary care, and 150,000 for secondary care.
The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation raises funds for capital needs at Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, Ontario. Capital needs include the replacement of medical equipment and repairs to infrastructure. The reality of limited public funding for healthcare continues to increase the financial pressure faced by our hospital. The objective of our annual fundraising campaign is to maintain and purchase equipment essential for offering patients healthcare comparable to any facility across the country.
Lake of the Woods District Hospital belongs to the community. We are all partners in the effort to ensure that quality medical and surgical services are available.
Donations to the annual campaign of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation represents investments in a healthy future for our community.
