Century 21’s Fundraiser for Mammography and Chemotherapy was a hit! Dozens of volunteers and Century 21’s amazing staff threw a party to remember!

490 people came out to the Kenora Curling Club on June 5th to help raise funds for the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation. The funds raised will be used to help purchase a new Mammography machine which will cost well beyond $600,000.

Attendees were entertained by Big Boogaloo and David Caissy who kept the dance floor hopping from beginning to end playing crowd favorites and some of their own songs.

We are so fortunate to have this kind of talent in our town. Big Boogaloo plays various charitable events around town, so make sure you get to hear them at least once! David Caissy and his wife have a studio also in town and are prepared to record you or your band!

To further entertain guests, Recreational Properties Realtor, Donny Booth ran Minnow Races at the back of the club. $5.00 per minnow with 4 racers and the winner received $10.00.  

T-shirts were on sale most of the night, and the bar was serving up the regular stuff plus pink hard lemonade. The silent auction was packed with great prizes donated by generous sponsors in the area. .

The Dragon Tamers Dragonboat team were on site before their trip to Peterborough selling tickets for a beautiful quilt made by one of their own in memory of Marie Titley, a Dragon Tamer who passed away recently.

The Hospital Foundation would like to sincerely thank all those who came out to the event as well as all the volunteers and organizers. We’ve received so many wonderful comments and thanks for a great evening. We’re hoping to make this happen again next year and have had people volunteer their time already!

Kenora Rotary donated $5000.00 to LWDHF at their weekly meeting, bringing their total donations to over $130,000.00!!!

Rotary has been a major supporter of the Hospital Foundation since 1993, when they made their first of many substantial donations.

The service clubs in Kenora have been an amazing source of support. We appreciate all the work they do for us, and for the community as a whole.

Approximately 45 people were in attendance as the LWDHF Board and Staff reviewed the 2009/2010 Fiscal Year. Special Guests included Mayor Len Compton, Councillors Chris Van Walleghem, Wendy Cuthbert, & Jim Parson; Mark Balcaen and Cindy Gasparini from the Hospital; Debbie Baldwin, Hospital Board Chair and Several Hospital Board members; Dave Lucas, Kenora OPP Detachment Commander and Sandy Compton, Hospital Auxiliary President.

Jess Rheault, Foundation Managing Director opened up the evening with a brief speech introducing some of the Foundation’s Accomplishments, and the results of our Board nominations, which will remain the same as last year with Thelma Wilkins-Page as Chair, Donna Wallace as Vice-Chair and Stephen Lundin & Gord Horne as Co-Secretary Treasurers.

Thelma Wilkins-Page took the floor and  gave her Report from the Chair, indicating how pleased she has been with our year, despite having a couple turnovers in staff. This year gave the Hospital it’s largest Foundation annual transfer since our inception in 1992, at close to $750,000.00.

Once again, we took time to recognize a few people who have been integral parts of our fundraising efforts for various reasons:

Bob Kozminski & Nicki Douglas (not present at meeting) who are the Co-Chairs of our Annual Lifesavers Dinner & Auction.  Bob and Nicki take time out of their very busy schedules to help us put together our biggest event of the year. They are responsible for bringing many seasonal residents out to the event and for securing much of the sponsorships and auction prizes. We can’t thank them enough for all their help in organizing this wonderful event.

Jarnel Contracting – Doug Lafreniere (not present at meeting) who pledged $15,000 to LWDHF – $10,000 of which we received in the 09/10 fiscal year. Jarnel also did all the work at no charge to erect our sign on Lakeview Drive with material provided by Home Hardware.

Lake of the Woods Electric-Glen McDougall (not present at meeting) who donated 150 man hours and help from United Rentals, Godbout Towing and Kenora Hydro to complete the retrofit on our Tree of Life which totaled in excess of $11,000.

Kenora Lake of the Woods Lions Club – President Don Brown who have been a major supporter for the Hospital’s Ophthalmology department. The Lions made a commitment of $22,000 for the Ultrasonic Washer and made good on their word in February 2010 with a final installment of $15,500.

Kinsmen Club of Kenora-Preident Travis Sokolyk The Kinsmen have helped us to secure $90,000 from the government by supporting our Capital Infrastructure Project with a $10,000 donation.

Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #12 – Sylvia Kinger, 1st vice The Legion has donated $13,000 in the last year to help us purchase Capital Equipment.

CJRL 89.5 Mix FM – Manager Mark Duggan CJRL provides us with 4, thirty second spots, 365 days a year which enables us to get our current projects, events and thank you messages out to the community.

Kenora Daily Miner & News – Reporter Jon Thompson The Miner & News is committed to covering our cause in their publication, allowing us to keep our community in the know about what’s going on at LWDHF and the needs of our Hospital.

The evening was short and sweet. A slideshow of equipment purchased by the Foundation and our events was running throughout to give people a visual of our work over the last year.

Our guests had time after the formalities to visit with the board and other guests and were treated to a wonderful set up of dainties, fruit and crackers provided by Chad Gropp during which time, our piggy bank on site received $22.30 in change donations!

Thanks to all of our guests, we truly appreciate your continued support and look forward to working with you for the benefit of our hospital in the coming year.

Century 21 Reynard Real Estate in Kenora is amping up for their BOOBIE NIGHTS social! They’ve partnered with local businesses to host an evening of Boobs, Bands and FUN in support of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital’s Chemotherapy and Mammography departments!

The event is being held at the Kenora Curling Club. Tickets are $20.00 each and are available at Century 21, Keric Funk Salon & Spa, Hojoe Coffee & Books, C&C Husky, LWDHF Offices and Silk, Satin & Lace.

Additionally, the event has T-Shirts! They are available for purchase at Keric Funk Salon & Spa and Century 21 Real Estate. They are $20.00 each.  

The event boasts a silent auction, sponsored by artisans and businesses in the community as well as live entertainment from Big Booglaoo who, if you haven’t heard already, you should come out to the event just to hear if for no other reason. Lead singer, Laura Cotton has a voice to envy!

Also providing entertainment will be special guest, Musician David Caissy.

The Hospital Foundation is excited to announce the acceptance of a new Director for our Board!

We’d like to introduce Constable Mitchell Boulette who was recently appointed Community Service Officer with the Treaty Three Police Service. We’re excited to have Mitchell on board. As someone who is really involved in the community and proud of his Aboriginal heritage, Mitchell will be a great source of information about Community Activities and the medical needs of our large Aboriginal population so that we may serve everyone in our community to the best of our ability!

Once again, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #12 in Kenora has helped us fund important medical equipment for the Hospital. This time it was $10,000 for the purchase of a new Telemedicine System.

Telemedicine allows patients to visit with physicians live over video for immediate care or capture video/still images and patient data are stored and sent to physicians for diagnosis and follow-up treatment at a later time.

Because we live in a small community with little access to specialists, Telemedicine really is an invaluable technology to us, and will save us and our patients a lot of money in travel costs.

A huge ‘THANK YOU’ goes to the Legion for helping to make this purchase possible so quickly.

Jess Rheault and Jackie Hopkins, ECG/EKG Tech, demonstrate the Holter Monitoring System we were recently fundraising for. The Holter monitor test is used to record your ECG tracing continuously for a period of 24 hours or longer. This provides the physician a better opportunity to capture any abnormal heartbeats or rhythms that may be causing your symptoms, especially if they occur frequently. With the help of the community, the Hospital was able to purchase 6 of these monitors.

TransCanada Corporation responds to aproposal for funding for our EKG by donating $5,000 to LWDHF through their Community Investment program. Dana Hanstead, from TransCanada Pipeline’s local office, presented the cheque to Donna Wallace, LWDHF Board Vice-Chair and Jess Rheault. This was the last push needed to finish off our fundraising efforts for the EKG.

The donation will go towards the purchase of Capital Equipment, keeping our hospital up to date with today’s evolving technology.

In 9 years, the iCare MasterCard program has raised over $29,000 for the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation.
